Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is definitely a real illness. PTSD can become present after living through or seeing a traumatic event, such as war, a hurricane, rape, physical abuse, or a bad accident. PTSD causes stress and fears even after the danger is over.

The onsite of PTSD can appear at different times for different people. Signs of PTSD may start soon after a frightening event and then continue. On the other hand, people develop new or more severe signs or symptoms months or even years later. PTSD can happen to anyone including children. Symptoms can include:

  • Flashbacks or feeling like the event is happening again

  • Trouble sleeping or having nightmares

  • Feeling alone
